Beyond the Click Episode 4 Lydia Whitley
[00:00:00] Rob: Welcome to Beyond the Click, a show about marketing professional businesses. Today we have Lydia Whitley at Life in Touch Home Organizing on the show. Welcome.
[00:00:13] Lydia: Thank you.
[00:00:15] Rob: So , so tell us a little bit about like how you got started and home organizing and what the journey was getting to life and touch home.
[00:00:28] Lydia: Oh, well my journey started probably about junior high. I had a best friend and her parents would, if her room wasn’t clean, she couldn’t go out, so,
[00:00:38] Rob: wow.
[00:00:39] Lydia: If we were gonna go to the movie or the park, I would just come over a little early and clean her room and then we could go play. So I’ve always been that way. Almost compulsively. So it’s nice to be able to make a career out of using a compulsion. And I’ve been through all kinds of systems over the years, so the nice thing is I really can tailor a system to someone’s habits versus trying to teach them new habits in the way that I do things.
So I do love it. I’ve had a variety of businesses. I still own a few businesses but this is my main focus and passion for.
[00:01:14] Rob: Okay, so what’s your favorite thing to do when not helping clients? Oh, outside of that, outside of outside of life in touch.
[00:01:25] Lydia: Well, for context would be basically anything that includes hanging out with my husband.
We have a good time. We, we travel, we love, luckily we both love spending time with family, so most of our journeys are leading to some kind of family member. And, and we. love our, we have a new home. We’ve been here about a year, and so we do love all the updates and improvements we’re doing to our home.
We are also both standup comedians, so that is kind of our paid hobby. . And we do that, we do that together, but not together. So we’re the same show, but we’re not George and Gracie.
[00:01:59] Rob: Yeah. Right. Not a, not a couple standup act.
[00:02:04] Lydia: Yes, we do sometimes what they call callback. So sometimes if you’re really listening .
I’ll say something and he’ll bring it up in his and refer to his wife or whatever he does. So, okay. Yeah, that’s the close
[00:02:16] Rob: interest. Interesting. Yeah. So, so, so far with Life In Touch Home Organizing, what’s what’s an interesting client story you could share with us?
[00:02:26] Lydia: Oh my goodness. . Well, one, one would go back to that friend who wasn’t a client but now is .
She would, she would call me about a week later and ask me where her library book was. And , I would say it’s exactly where it should be. It’s on your bedside table, right? Cause that was the right place, . Luckily I’ve learned there’s not a right place. There’s a efficient place and a consistent. Where does your mind go for finding.
Not so much for filing and but I, I will say I’ve learned, I had a person in a one bedroom, one bath with like two extra rooms aside from the kitchen. Mm-hmm. and her closet was one, it was like a coat closet. It was small. And when she was showing me, she told me, she said, I’m passionate about nothing in this closet.
It was all hand me downs and given to. Some doesn’t fit. Some’s not my colors. And I thought, man, that’s gonna be quick. I thought Next time , when I go actually do the work, it’ll be an hour max. Well, we do it in partnership and it was every piece of clothing at a story attached to it. And it took, it, it took.
Three, a little over three hours. It was surprising to me for a person with very little clothing and supposedly no passion about them. But my favorite from her was about the third walking shirt she held up. She would talk about softness, but she said, this is my walk. This is one of the shirts I walk in, but I cut the sleeves out because I get hot.
And by the third one she said, “you know… maybe I should just go buy a shirt that has no sleeves for walking instead of continuing to cut the sleeves out.” I was like, I think, yeah, let’s put that on your shopping list. Let’s, you know, let’s make you happy in the walking part. I think that’s probably one of my funniest, you always have, you know, the husband comes and pulls things out at the throwaway pile.
You know, little, little consistent, quirky things that happen.
[00:04:21] Rob: Sure. What’s, what’s your favorite advice for growing your business.
[00:04:26] Lydia: Oh, now advice for me growing or for advice for people using my business. Which,
[00:04:33] Rob: which advice for you that you found that works over time for growing your own business?
[00:04:39] Lydia: Just share about your business with everybody you meet. I I always say it’s like fall when you fall in love. You know, you could work in the name of this person into any, when I first started dating Brian, you could say it’s raining outside. And I would say, oh, Brian, Brian has an umbrella everywhere.
One in this car, one by the door, one at work , you know, and, and that was in the first 60 seconds I would recommend. So how do. your name of your business and what you do without being obnoxious, you know. So on a the same example, on a rainy day, I would say this is the best day to organize with my clients because there’s nothing else you can do outside.
So it’s a great time to be inside and making a difference in your home. So,
[00:05:26] Rob: That’s some, some great advice. Yeah. How, if we wanna have you help us organize our lives, how can we find you?
[00:05:33] Lydia: I do have a website. It is Life in Touch, all spelled out. Lifeintouch.abmp.com and you’ll go in there and several of my businesses are in there and you just look for the tab on or organizing home or office.
I do both. and the best way to reach me, you can go read about me there. The best way to reach me is to actually text me. It’s the fastest. And that is my phone number. (336) 944-7525. And I’ll, I get back pretty quick.
[00:06:11] Rob: Okay. Well, thank you so much for being on the show, Lydia, and I’m, oh,
[00:06:15] Lydia: this was such a pleasure.
Thank you for asking me. I love sharing about what I’m. Absolutely,
